Things to consider about stone
Granite:
Granite does come with some yearly maintenance. It's the homeowners responsibility to seal granite every year. This may sound intimidating, but it truly is a minimal task. Think Karate Kid, wipe the sealant onto the surface, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe the excess off. That's it! Click this link for our recommended sealant for homeowners. Granite is about the toughest material you can place upon your cabinets. Granite laughs in the face of heat, knives, and about anything else you can throw at it. The reasoning for sealing granite is simple, it's a porous material by nature, so the sealant prolongs the absorption rate of fluids pour onto the surface. Sealant is more for the "just in case" scenario. It's quite difficult to stain without sealant, damn near impossible with the proper sealant. The first application is done in house prior to installation, so no worries for 12 months!
Quartz:
When we have customers who would love to have stone, but do not like the idea of ANY maintenance, we direct them to quartz. Quartz is the man made counterpart to granite. Quartz is the most difficult to stain, trust me the wife has tried her best! Seriously though, quartz is the byproduct of science tackling the one con of natural stone, sealing maintenance. This material has all the strengths of granite, extremely tough, scratch resistant, laughs at moderate heat, and the beauty to pull it all together. Typically quartz is the most expensive product depending on the color group you choose. There are stunning colors in reasonable groups, but the one of a kind looks will run some extra $$$. Don't say we didn't warn you!
